The Little Ones

“For God chooses the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.  He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things–the things that are not–to nullify the things that are, so that no one can boast before Him.”  (I Cor 1:27-29)

God kept on choosing people who had no strength or wisdom or cunning of their own to accomplish His purposes.  Moses couldn’t speak well–some say he stuttered.  David was just a boy who went after the Giant with a slingshot.  Elijah was a homeless wanderer.  The apostles were cowards who ran away when Jesus was arrested.  And so on.  But through each and every one, God worked miracles.  Why don’t we see so many miracles in America today?  We are a culture that always tries to manage everything ourselves and never asks for help.  We live by our creed “God helps those who help themselves.”  But God chooses the helpless.  Why?  Perhaps its because they come to the end of themselves almost at the very beginning.  They desperately need God to even begin what He has asked.  When we are desperate for God, that seems to be the time when He loves to show up.  Our strength is puny.  The difference is some of us don’t know it–and some do.  Those are the ones God loves to rescue.  God loves truth, and truth is–its all about Him, and its always His power that accomplishes anything.  Our power is illusion, and He will have none of it.
