How to Get Past My Bad Moods

 

A long time ago I read in the bible to “Bring every thought captive” (2 Corinthians 10:5). That was a new concept to me, for I always believed our thoughts were things that just ran in and out of our minds, not something we were to control. And so I would dwell on pessimistic, grumpy thoughts on days when I felt grumpy. But I don’t have to do that. I can change the way I think. I can choose how I think. I learned from Philippians 4:8: “whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things.” I have since heard this verse called the “mental health verse.” It certainly can turn around a grumpy day!

Some days I feel grumpy because I don’t feel well. Even then, I have to go to Jesus in prayer and talk to him about how I feel and ask his help. Then I thank him for all the good things in my life, and I usually feel my mood lift even if physically I still don’t feel great. I have to let my physical and emotional feelings take a back seat to the thoughts which can lift me to a higher place. Its not easy, but talking to Jesus helps.
